Education Fund

Staff Spotlight

Letter From our Ed Fund President

Dear Live Oak Families:

Welcome Back! I am sure this has been a summer like no other but on behalf of the Live Oak Education Fund, I want to say thank you to all of you who supported Live Oak Education Fund during the 2019-20 school year. Through your donations, we were able to raise ~$400,000 last year investing that back into your children and school.

As we begin the 2020-21 school year in a full remote capacity, I am sure many of you have a lot of unanswered questions.  We understand the frustrations many of you experienced during last year's remote learning and while we don’t have direct control, the board has been working hard with the staff to try and address some of those concerns. The greatest assets we have at Live Oak have been and will continue to be the amazing teachers and staff that we entrust our children to. Ensuring they have everything needed while also providing parents with supporting resources to achieve a robust learning environment for our children remain our top focus.

In June, the SRVUSD asked our board to provide a binding letter of commitment and 100% payment for all positions that we planned to fund for this upcoming academic year. Given the uncertainties surrounding what this school year would look like and the changing needs required around remote learning, the board had to make some very difficult funding choices that resulted in the reduction of three positions. These reductions were made to ensure that once detailed plans and needs were understood, as well as clarity around registration fundraising, we would have the ability to direct funding where needed in the most impactful way, up to and including rehiring. This board is committed to the teachers and staff of Live Oak to be fluid in deploying the capital resources where they are needed when clear needs are determined.

As we prepare for the upcoming year with reduced enrollment of about 100 fewer students than last year, your donations have never been more important. Here is some additional context on how your donations will be used and applied in a remote learning environment:

  1. Your student will be able to pick up beginning-of-school session materials:
    1. Supplies: As in years past all supplies will be purchased for each student.
    2. Print Packets: Understanding the frustration around printing of daily pages Ed Fund is working with staff to support and fund packet printing. There still may be a need to print some items at home but this will drastically reduce that requirement.
  2. Art Instruction: All Grade levels will receive one block of Art instruction per week, which will be available for video playback should anyone not be able to attend or want to go back and review.
  3. Science: All Grade levels will receive one block of Science instruction per week with Ed Fund-provided teaching supplies supporting remote instruction.
  4. Para Educators: Paras will be available to teachers at Grade levels to support activities as required.
  5. Grants: The Live Oak Education Foundation will continue to make available special teacher grants to implement and pilot various instruction/learning programs to help ensure students are getting the most out of remote learning.

We hope the Live Oak community will step up its participation during registration to ensure no additional cuts occur to the important programs upon which your students rely.

What can you do?

To continue all the important programs LOEF has historically supported, we need EVERYONE’s support, so please make a donation! Did you know we continue to have the lowest elementary "ask" in the Dougherty Valley? This year we are asking each family to donate $595 per student at fall registration. That breaks down to less than a cup of coffee a day! We understand a single payment may be an issue so we have extended the payment options to break this payment out over 6 payments.

This requested donation amount reflects the true cost of maintaining the level of curriculum and programming that have made students so successful at Live Oak and that our families have come to expect. The money raised at registration in August will be used to fulfill the immediate student needs this school year. This will allow for a more enriching and innovative learning experience for our children. In addition to the normal activities, we are also continually evaluating programs and needs that arise based on the remote learning.

In addition to the donations we receive at registration, you can also double your Ed Fund donation through an employer company match. Check to see if your company has a corporate match program or email us and we can help you find out. Please make sure that during registration, both parents’ and employer’s information are listed in the system. This will allow us to send you the automated information for steps required with each employer.

Our goal for 2020-21 year is to raise $250,000 to cover otherwise unfunded expenses:

Salaries of staff not paid by SRVUSD ($165,000)

Without your support, your students will have reduced or no access to these services as the district provides limited budget for these staff:

  • Classroom Para Educators
  • Art Teacher

Technology and Classroom Supplies ($70,000)

Purchase, maintenance and replacement of technology used in the classrooms/remote learning and classroom supplies:

  • All School/Classroom Supplies
  • iPads/Chromebooks for in class instruction
  • Art Supplies
  • Science equipment and lab supplies
  • Classroom Leveled Libraries
  • Technology upgrade

Operating Expenses ($15,000)

  • Software
  • Licensing fees
  • Program support
  • Marketing
  • Credit Card Processing

Your support of Ed Fund is what helps Live Oak consistently remain a high-performing school. Live Oak Ed Fund is a non-profit organization, made up of elected parents and staff whose sole objective is to ensure that your donation dollars provide the best possible curriculum, staffing and support for YOUR child. Your donation may be tax-deductible (consult with your financial advisor) and goes directly to the classroom and supports our mission of maintaining and improving the quality of education at Live Oak. Thank you for your continued support of Live Oak Ed Fund and have a fantastic 2020-21 school year!

"It is true -- without Ed Fund’s financial support the work we do to ensure our school’s vision, maintain high academic standards and implement strategic interventions to account for success for all students would be highly compromised. As the governing board of Live Oak Elementary School, School Site Council (SSC) fully supports Ed Fund and its initiatives"
